- Save money on buying overpriced commercial candles
- Make and design your own candles
- Sell your candles through your new home based business
- Protect your health by using only natural ingredients in your candles
My name is Catherine and I have been successfully making and selling my own candles for 8+ years.
Over this time I have come to realize a few secrets of the commercial candle industry.
I am going to share a few of these with you now which will change the way that you think about buying candles forever.
Candle Secret Number 1
Did you know that many of the commercial candles out there on the market contain harmful and toxic chemicals that could be dangerous to your health?
What is even scarier, it isn’t even disclosed to the consumer that candles contain these ingredients.. Most people do not even realize this when they purchase candles.
Let’s look at some of these in detail as I am sure you will want to know the nasty chemicals you could be exposing yourself to.
Commercial Candles Usually Have Synthetic Scents
Scented candles are extremely popular but to purchase a candle with natural scent is highly expensive. Therefore, the cheaper scented candles are scented with synthetic scents.
There has been some research to show that scented candles can produce smoke laced with almost as many toxins as those produced by cigarettes! Unfortunately, most candles are lit I poorly ventilated rooms which means that it can increase the pollution inside the room. The increased pollution means that you get exposed to a more highly concentrated dose of these nasty chemicals which can cause asthma, eczema and skin complaints.
Asthma UK carried out an online survey and found that scented candles made a quarter of respondents’ asthma symptoms worse.
Some of the chemicals used are methylene chloride, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, ethyl alcohol and benzyl chloride
Cheap Candles Which Are Imported
Can Contain Paraffin Wax
Most cheap candles imported and sold are made from paraffin wax which is a derivative of the petroleum industry. These candles have been shown to release an alarming range of chemicals which really can be dangerous to your health when the candles are lit.
Researchers have found that some of these nasty chemical’s include carcinogenic (cancer causing chemicals), toluene and benzene which are known for causing asthma attacks.
These are released when the candle is lit as they are emitted via the soot coming from the candle. Research has shown that that soot particles can penetrate the deepest parts of the lung and, as such, have the potential to aggravate respiratory illness.
Some of the toxins present in the paraffin wax include: Acetone, Trichlorofluoromethane, Carbon Disulfide, 2-Butanone, Trichloroethane, Trichloroethene, Carbon Tetrachloride, Tetrachloroethene, Chlorobenzene, Ethylbenzene, Styrene, Xylene, Phenol, Cresol, Cyclopentene. These toxins are found in things like paint and varnish remover.
Colored Candles Can Have Synthetic
Candles which are cheaper and imported generally have got synthetic colors which can be problematic when lit. The candle can release dangerous chemicals from the coloring out into the air which can be dangerous to your health.
Some artificial colours can contain heavy-metal impurities (lead, arsenic etc.) which are known to be carcinogenic. So, why are they still being used and why is the general public not being made aware of this??
Candle Wicks Can Contain Lead
Which Is Highly Toxic
Most candles sold use a cored wick which means that the wick is supported by either metal or paper to make sure that it stands upright.
If the candle wick does have a metal cored wick, it can release some nasty soot into the air. Research has shown that Zinc, Lead and Tin particles can be released into the air and they are not the most healthy to breath in
Unfortunately, for the commercial candle industry it is so much cheaper for them to use these toxic inferior ingredients in the candles than it is to use natural wax, natural essential oils and natural colours.
This is really disappointing and super scary.
I have tried for years to avoid products that are unnatural around my home which can contain these nasty toxic ingredients because of all the published studies on what the toxicity can do to the human body.
This is why I have started making my own candles made out of pure, natural and healthy beeswax.
Candle Secret Number 2
Commercial candles can be so incredibly expensive, especially when they are colored or scented.
By making your own beeswax candles, you will save so much money!
So let’s take a close look at costs…..
Did you know….
Homemade beeswax candles costs only
1/5 cost to make compared to
Commercially purchased beeswax candles!
Did you know that the average cost of a commercial beeswax candle is $25?
Ok, so let’s look at the numbers for buying a commercial beeswax candle here and just look at the cost over a year:
If you burn beeswax candle nearly every night and the candle lasts for approx. 10 hours which gives you one week:
Average Cost to Purchase $25
Which makes it $2.50 per hour burn time
Yearly Cost is 52 weeks x $25 which is $1300 per year!
This can turn a simple relaxing ritual into a very expensive habit!
What about The Cost Of Homemade Beeswax Candles?…
Now, if we run the same numbers again for a homemade beeswax candle:
You can make a homemade beeswax candle for $5 each.
Average cost to make $5 which
makes it $0.50c per hour burn time!
Yearly cost is $5 x 52 weeks = $260 per year
Yes, that’s correct.
Candle Secret Number 3
You can design and make your own candles!
There are so many different types of candles that you can make – a few examples being tea lights, pillar candles and you can even make your own molds for the candles.
Candle Secret Number 4
You can sell your candles to bring in an income!
Yes, there are so many ways that you can sell the beeswax candles that you make. Markets and online are a few of the avenues that you can sell candles through.
So if you enjoy making candles and want to make an income from it, why not sell them?
In fact, people these days are getting wiser to the additives and toxic ingredients that go into so many of the commercially made products these days. There really is a need for pure and natural products, and candles are no exception.
There really is a demand for natural candles out there!
So, What is Beeswax?
Beeswax is the most natural and healthy wax and there are so many benefits to using it compared to other waxes. Yes it is a bit more expensive than other waxes out there, but let’s look at the benefits:
- Burns slowly and evenly so you get a slow and natural burn of the candle.
- Beeswax purifies the air by letting off a stream of negative ions. These negative ions attract positive toxins, mould and other nasty particles which then make them drop to the floor.
- Lasts at least 10 times longer than other waxes out there so your candles last longer
- Beeswax candles are carbon neutral and are environment friendly.
- As beeswax is from bees, it is a renewable source.
Where Can I Learn How
To Make Beeswax Candles?
I really became so vocal about making my own beeswax candles due to safety and cost. My passion for making my own beeswax candles got to a stage where my friends and family inspired me to put something together to teach others how to make a safe, inexpensive and healthy beeswax candle at home.
So, I have put together this website and a step by step instruction guide so I can teach other people how to do this for themselves.

I did run into some difficulties and I want to be able to help you not make the same mistakes that I made when I first started making my own homemade beeswax candles.
My first time making Beeswax candles:
My first time I made beeswax candles it was nothing short of a disaster!
Everything was going really well, the wax melted; I added the colour and scent and then poured the wax. I was so proud that I had made these beautiful candles for xmas presents and then…..the candles cracked! As they were cooling, they started to crack in the middle.
No one told me told me that cooling the candles too fast was the culprit!
As a result I had to start again!
